This selection comes from small-scale productions in the central part of the country, south of Mount Kenya, on the high plateaus of the "Kiambu" appellation. It is produced in the following counties: Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and Kiambu.
Kenyan producers are generally smallholders. Two-thirds own an average of 300 trees and produce 1000 to 1500 kg of cherries per year. The remaining third own what are known in the industry as "Estates," which are grouped into cooperatives.

The cooperatives are in charge of preparing the coffee after receiving the freshly harvested cherries from the producers. The subsequent process is known as "Kenyan washing" or "double washing".
